What Is Depo-Provera?
Depo-Provera is a hormonal contraceptive administered by injection every three months. It contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic progestin that prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus.
While generally effective in preventing pregnancy, Depo-Provera has been associated with potential side effects, including:

- Weight gain,
- Irregular bleeding,
- Mood changes,
- Headaches, and
- An increased risk of meningioma.

Lawsuits allege the manufacturer of Depo-Provera failed to adequately warn patients and healthcare providers about the risk of developing benign brain tumors, particularly meningiomas, from the use of their product.
A 2024 study published in the British Medical Journal found that women who used Depo-Provera for more than a year were five and a half times more likely to develop meningiomas.

According to the complaint filed by Schmidt’s lawyers, Pfizer should have known that Depo-Provera increases the risk of brain tumors. However, they have not disclosed this information to patients or doctors.
