The Science / How It Happened

It Wasn’t Vanity.
It Was a Dangerous Product.

These products weren’t just poorly tested; they contained chemicals that scientists now classify as endocrine disruptors. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs, interfere with the body’s hormone-producing system, and hair relaxers have been shown to contain several of them: parabens, phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), metals, and formaldehyde. When applied to the scalp, especially when the scalp is burned, cut, or has lesions, these chemicals are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Endocrine Disruptors in Every Bottle

Chemicals like formaldehyde and parabens found in hair relaxers mimic estrogen in the body, disrupting the endocrine system and creating the hormonal conditions that can trigger estrogen-dependent cancers like uterine and endometrial cancer. These weren’t trace contaminants; they were active ingredients.

The Study

The NIH Confirmed the Link

The National Institutes of Health tracked nearly 34,000 women over 11 years as part of the Sister Study. Researchers found that women who used chemical hair straighteners more than four times in the past year faced more than double the uterine cancer risk of women who did not use them and the projected lifetime risk for frequent users jumped from 1.6% to 4%.

The Impact

Black Women Bear a Disproportionate Burden

Approximately 60% of the women in the NIH study who reported using straighteners in the prior year identified as Black. Because Black women use these products more frequently and often begin using them at younger ages, researchers noted that the health impact may be significantly greater for this group, yet the products were marketed to them without adequate cancer warnings.

Active Federal MDL

U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois – Judge Mary M. Rowland

Established February 2023. As of 2025, this is one of the four largest active multidistrict litigations in the United States, with over 10,500 pending claims against manufacturers including L’Oréal, Revlon, SoftSheen, Strength of Nature, and Namaste Laboratories. The litigation is currently in the bellwether phase, with select cases being prepared for trial to help gauge jury response and potential settlement values.

The NIH Study That Changed Everything

National Institutes of Health – Hair Straightening Chemicals Associated with Higher Uterine Cancer Risk (2022)

This federal study of nearly 34,000 women was the first epidemiological evidence linking hair relaxer use to uterine cancer. Garcia v. L’Oréal USA, Inc.

New York Supreme Court – 2025

A New York Supreme Court judge rejected L’Oréal’s motion to dismiss Mayra Garcia’s hair relaxer cancer lawsuit in December 2025, allowing all claims to proceed. Garcia alleges the products were promoted as safe despite containing hormone-disrupting chemicals that led to her endometrial cancer diagnosis.

As of early 2026, 10 bellwether cases have been selected and are being actively prepared for trial. These cases will be the first to put hair relaxer manufacturers before a jury and are expected to shape settlement values across all remaining claims.
