What Is Necrotizing enterocolitis?

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious gastrointestinal problem that mostly affects premature babies. The condition inflames intestinal tissue, causing it to die.

A hole (perforation) may form in your baby’s intestine. Bacteria can leak into the abdomen (belly) or bloodstream through the hole. NEC usually develops within two to six weeks after birth. (Source: Cleveland Clinic)

Several studies have indicated that cow’s milk–based infant formulas lead to a higher incidence of NEC in preterm infants than does human milk.

THE CONNECTION TO BABY FORMULA

Studies have found that the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants increases with the administration of cow’s milk based infant formula and decreases with the administration of breast milk. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).

In a complaint filed in May 2021, in the US District Court for the Eastern District of CA, Alicia Restad and Daniel Renteria-Hernandez allege Abbott Laboratories and Mead Johnson & Company, LLC are responsible for the death of their child.  The baby, born premature, sadly passed away after 16 days due to complications of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

According to the lawsuit, the manufacturer of the formula fails to properly warn of the link between the ingredients and NEC.

If your baby or a loved one has suffered from complications after being fed Similac, you may be entitled to financial compensation for medical expenses. Contact us today for a free and confidential case evaluation.
