What is Paraquat?

Paraquat is a chemical herbicide first introduced in 1961.  Paraquat products have been through a variety of brand names including Gramoxone, Blanco, Devour, Firestorm, Paraquat Concentrate, and more.  It’s used primarily for weed and grass control and is one of the most commonly used herbicides, worldwide.

The chemical is highly toxic and as a result, The US Environmental Protection Agency classifies Paraquat as “restricted use,” meaning it can only be used by people who are commercially licensed applicators, the group most at risk for exposure.

In an article from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, “There is strong scientific evidence linking the herbicide to Parkinson’s, including one study that found people exposed to paraquat at a younger age — in their teen or young adult years — had an increased Parkinson’s risk of 200 to 600 percent, depending on the overall number of years of exposure.”

Even licensed professionals are at high risk of Paraquat exposure, which can occur through skin absortion, ingestion, breathing droplets and penetration through cuts.

Individuals including farm workers and herbicide applicators, who developed Parkinson’s disease after exporure to Paraquat may be entitled to significant financial compensation.
