What is Truvada?
TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that is used to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. It is a two-drug combination of emtricitabine (FTC) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF).
It’s used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to help reduce the infection risk of the sexually acquired HIV-1 infection. The drug can also be used to treat individuals who have tested positive for HIV-1 and help contain the spread to other individuals.
In addition to Truvada, other known TDF drugs include:

TRUVADA COMPLICATIONS
Truvada and similar drugs containing TDF have been linked to the following complications:
BONE SIDE EFECTS
Osteopenia – A condition that occurs when the body doesn’t make new bone as quickly as it reabsorbs old bone.
Osteoporosis – A condition in which bones become weak and brittle.
Osteomalacia – The softening of bones.
KIDNEY SIDE EFECTS
Kidney Disease – Affects the body’s ability to clean/filter blood and help to control blood pressure. When left untreated, the damage can lead to renal failure.
Truvada has been found to heighten the risk of chronic kidney disease and acute renal failure.
PERSONAL INJURY AND CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS
Many lawsuits have been filed against Gilead Sciences, Inc, the maker of Truvada.
In May 2018, plaintiffs filed personal injury lawsuits against Gilead Sciences, which claimed the company knew for years that TDF was “…highly toxic in the doses prescribed and risked permanent and possibly fatal damage to the kidneys and bones,” also while knowing a safer alternative existed in tenofovir alafenamide (TAF).
At the same time, a separate class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of “All persons located within California who were prescribed and ingested Viread, Truvada, or Atripla from October 26, 2001, through the present, who were personally or whose physician was exposed to Gilead’s misrepresentations.” The case claims Gilead Sciences failed to warn patients of the dangerous side effects of TDF.
